Web Master's Notes

Thank you for visiting this page.  I am your appliance repair maven that has attempted to learn web design and SEO (search engine optimization). I am learning by "trial and error" and find that this "on the job training" is quite rewarding. I am not a paid professional and this accounts for what some might consider to be an informal layout (also, there is no built in spellchecker which accounts for the spelling that you might encounter).  In my attempts to design the site and optimize it, I have consulted with others such as with Web.com, Godaddy.com and Supermedia.com. I have also consulted with a computer whiz (talks about his computer consulting work for NASA) which I met at the local cafe, where I occasionally go to do my web work (incedently, this genius now operates a dog walking business).

If you are puzzled by this non formal manner of conversation and you are seeking a focal point of this page, I would say that you can consider this page as a webmaster's "Blog" or diary. If you are wondering why an "appliance repair" site has a page that seems so unrelated to the product we are promoting, this would be understandable. For now, we will not address this question directly.
One motivation is to create a site that has a personable human face that touches and engages you as a human being just like us. We have found that visitors do appreciate our unique style and we appreciate having a dialogue with you.

I must say that it is fascinating to be a web designer, especially when you get to see the 'waves' or outcomes of your work
manifest in this new medium called the web. You know, when you start building a site, you have no idea if anyone will even notice your page in the endless ocean billions of webpages. So then, it is both surprising and rewarding to discover that your words have an audience.

There are also some fascinating and perplexing statistics that I have found and hope that perhaps others could shed light. The "straw that broke the camel's back" that finally moved me to launch this page was the discovery of some unusual and unexpected visitor report provided by our web host "godaddy.com".

Next I will describe the curious statistics that I hope someone can shed light on:
We have a great deal of visitors from important economic and internet/web technology centers. We have many visitors from Redmond, Washington, MOUNTAIN VIEW and SUNNYVALE, CALIFORNIA Moscow, Russia. Please see the web analytics data on where our visitors are coming from (geographical data) or the keyword that search users have used to find our site ( link below) and snapshot/screenshot at the bottom of this page. The question is why?

I did a wikipedia search for mountain view and found the following on the wiki page on the economy of this city:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mountain_View,_California#Economy
Here I discovered a thing I didn't know: "Mountain View is one of the major cities that make up Silicon Valley". I would like to believe that this is related to the unique mission, design and goals that this site represents.

Or perhaps it is related to another interesting statistic: I have recently included some general pricing trends in the service industry, and some journalistic features such information about service technician income, Sears service, customer service approaches and a review of consumer behavior trends. I wonder if perhaps a College proefessor teaching a business or economics course gave his/her students an assignment to compare service rates.

As far as the visits from silicone vally, my only guess is that it has to do with the following page about us receiving the letter fromGoogle recognizing our achivement in ranking at the top 1% .

***           ***         ***
Another reason why I created this page is to open a dialogue with other webmasters and SEO (search engine optimization) individuals. This is a very perplexing field. I don't know why we rank well under some search terms but not others, while some competitors have better results. For example: When I misspelled the word "Baltimore" when I searched for appliance technicians in this location, I did not find our site on the first two google pages. But my usual competitors were still at the top of the first page. I don't understand why. Did they include misspelled key words? If so, where? I am told not to overload the key word tags, so where are you suposed to optimize for these. A second example is if you substitute the term "service" for "repair" here again the results change. And also, if I place "Baltimore" at the start of the search phrase, my listing moves down, but not for my competitors: Why is this?

I have also created a page that contains actual search terms, and keyword data from our web analytics that searchers have used to find our site. I hope this could be useful as a case study, and, or informative for web masters and SEO researchers.

It is interesting that the Alexa "visitor stats" data differs significantly from what Google analytics and our web host's analytics have found. The majority of our visitors are new and come from search engines (which is not what alexa has found in Feb 2011)

I truely appreciate your feedback. It is very rewarding to hear from people who visit.

If you have an alternative explanation, I would love to hear from you. Also, if you are visiting this site from Silicon Vally or Redmond Washington (or any of the other top visitor locations) please use the "Contact us" link or "Service Request Form" if the other link is unavailable
and please write in the "subject" "Attention Web master"

Best regards,

Mike
